CDC’s New Numbers on CFS Prevalence Should Hit the Street Soon

by Editor
August 8, 2006

As we reported in June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has informed the CFS community that it has new numbers on the incidence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but prefers to keep them confidential until publication of its recent study explaining those numbers. At that time, the ballyhoo of a major national press event should provide a booster rocket for official kickoff of the CDC’s CFS Awareness Campaign – initially scheduled for June 7 and now expected soon.

The CDC says its new numbers will reflect more specific screening methods and diagnostic criteria than were used in two widely-cited previous studies of CFS incidence, reported by De Paul University in 1999, and the CDC in 2003.

The new CDC study, which calculates the prevalence of CFS based on its incidence in the state of Georgia, is being “submitted by early August to an open-access peer-reviewed journal,” according to Dr. William Reeves, a principal CFS researcher at the CDC.

“Open-access” means it will be available for download to all who wish to read it, at no charge. We’re watching for it.
