National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFIDS) Conference A Success

by By: Molly Holzschlag
December 1, 1994

The CFIDS medical conference at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which took place on October 7 through 10, had 500 attendees and was sponsored by the American Association for CFS. Many research papers were presented, and a variety of discussion sessions were conducted for doctors and for patients.

This conference was noted for its prominent speakers. The keynote speaker was the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Philip Lee who flew in from Washington to make his address. The conference was also addressed at length by U.S. Major General Ronald Blanck, D.O., a leading figure in the investigation of Gulf War Disease, which has been linked by some to CFIDS. Other speakers and presenters included Dr. Jay Levy of the Univ. of California at San Francisco, Dr. Anthony Komaroff of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Paul Levine of NIH and president of the American Association for CFS, Dr. Mark Demitrack of the Univ. of Michigan, Dr. Nancy Klimas of the Univ. of Miami, Dr. 'William Reeves of the CDC, and Dr. George Rutherford, the State officer for California.

Among the many presentations made at the conference, highlighted topics included: HPA dysfunction; genetic predisposition; gradual vs. sudden onset; CDC, data on prognosis; the tragedy of CFIDS in children; survey of physicians on treatments; the value of lifestyle changes; gammaglobulin; carnitine studies; research methods; definition issues; prevalence rates; differing results about HHV6, EBV and mitochondria; the mysterious New Zealand particle; benefits and limits of neural imaging; and EEG tests.

This edition of Healthwatch reports on research studies and treatment recommendations that were presented at the Florida conference.
